Zhongsheng Environmental multi-media filters remove suspended solids, turbidity, and colloidal matter from raw water, achieving SDI values suitable for downstream RO membrane protection. Robust, low-maintenance vessels with long-life filter media and automated backwash.
Multi-media filtration is a proven depth-filtration technology that passes raw or partially treated water through stratified layers of filter media — typically anthracite coal, quartz sand, and garnet — graded by density and particle size. This arrangement captures large particles in the upper coarse layers and progressively finer particles at depth, delivering low-turbidity, low-SDI effluent ideal for protecting downstream membrane systems. Zhongsheng Environmental multi-media filters are available as standard vertical pressure vessels or custom-engineered horizontal units for high-flow industrial and municipal pre-treatment applications.
During the service cycle, raw water enters the vessel from the top and flows downward through stratified filter media. The coarsest, lightest layer (anthracite) sits at the top and captures large suspended particles. Intermediate layers (quartz sand, 0.5–1.0 mm effective size) trap mid-range particulates, while the densest bottom layer (garnet or magnetite) polishes out fine solids. The filtered water is collected by an underdrain system and discharged as low-turbidity effluent. When headloss across the media bed reaches a set threshold — or at a timed interval — the PLC initiates backwash: treated water is pumped upward through the bed at high velocity (10–15 L/s·m²), fluidising and reclassifying the media while flushing trapped solids to drain. The media resettles in the correct density-graded order, ready for the next service cycle.

Zhongsheng Environmental has engineered and supplied hundreds of multi-media filtration vessels for water treatment plants across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Every unit is hydraulically modelled for its specific duty, ensuring optimal media depth, grading, and backwash design. Our vessels are built to pressure-vessel codes with premium internals — slotted-nozzle or hub-lateral underdrains, sight glasses, and sample ports — delivering consistent, membrane-ready water quality with minimal operator intervention and the lowest lifecycle cost in its class.
8–12 m/h standard; backwash required when headloss reaches approximately 5 meters.
Anthracite coal, quartz sand, activated carbon, and garnet/magnetite, graded by density for optimal depth filtration.
Backwash cycle: 5–7 minutes, intensity 10–15 L/s·m²; frequency depends on influent quality (typically every 12–24 hours).
Minimum 0.04 MPa inlet pressure; backwash pressure ≥0.15 MPa.
25%–50%, ensuring thorough cleaning and proper media re-stratification.
