A water softener removes calcium and magnesium hardness by ion exchange, protecting boilers, cooling systems, heat exchangers and RO membranes from scale. The KJ-WT series is a twin-tank design: two resin vessels operate in alternation so that one remains in service while the other regenerates, giving genuinely uninterrupted soft water rather than the gap that a single-tank unit imposes. Capacities run from 1 to 45 T/h, each model paired with a correctly sized brine tank from 60 to 2,000 litres.
Hard water passes through a bed of strong-acid cation exchange resin charged with sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium in the water have a higher affinity for the resin than sodium does, so they are captured on the resin and an equivalent quantity of sodium is released into the water — the hardness is exchanged out. When the bed approaches exhaustion, the control valve takes that vessel offline and draws concentrated brine from the salt tank through it; the high sodium concentration reverses the exchange, stripping calcium and magnesium off the resin and flushing them to drain. The vessel is then rinsed and returned to standby. Because the KJ-WT series uses two vessels, the second is always in service while the first regenerates, which is why the specification matters for boiler feed and process duty where a hardness breakthrough is unacceptable.

Softeners are sized wrongly more often than any other item in a water treatment train, because buyers specify against flow rate when the binding constraint is exchange capacity — hardness multiplied by daily volume. Undersize it and the unit regenerates constantly, burns salt and eventually lets hardness through to the boiler it was bought to protect. Salt consumption is proportional to the hardness removed, not to the size of the machine — harder water and higher volume means more frequent regeneration. Soft water salt is typically supplied in 10 kg packs. Correct sizing is what keeps salt cost down, since an undersized unit regenerates far more often than necessary.
No. Softening exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium; total dissolved solids stay essentially the same. If you need to reduce TDS, remove salts or produce potable water from a saline source, you need reverse osmosis. Softening is frequently installed as pretreatment ahead of RO rather than as an alternative to it.
